AAL’s ‘The Future of Us’ Exhibition Pavilion has been shortlisted by the British Institution of Structural Engineers for the Structural Design Awards 2016 (https://www.istructe.org/structuralawards/the-shortlist/small-projects/the-future-of-us-gridshell). The Awards are held every year in London to recognise the world’s most talented structural designers, showcase the projects that lead industry development, and raise awareness about structural engineers’ role as the guardians of public safety and as creative, innovative design professionals.
The Awards feature the ultimate accolade of “The Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence” – with previous winners as diverse as the Singapore Sports Hub, Glass Lantern, Apple Zorlu in Turkey, Taizhou Bridge in China, and the London 2012 Velodrome.
The Awards are a unique opportunity to showcase outstanding work to an audience of leading industry professionals and to raise awareness of great engineering with the general public. A Structural Award is an internationally recognised symbol of excellence, and even being shortlisted marks out a project as cutting edge.
From the judges’ comment:
This Singaporean gridshell has many pragmatic features. It is made of multi-radius steel arches that are braced together using the primary purlins to gain proper gridshell behaviour. The judges liked this combination of architectural form and straightforward construction, joined together by sophisticated engineering.
